TIP OF THE MONTH 15 : Wireless operation of leak detectors

QUESTION: I need to test large vessels occasionally, which involves the leak detector standing on the floor alongside the pumping system. I have to climb around on a scaffold, and always struggle with the remote controller cable and the helium cylinder. Isn’t there an easier way?

ANSWER: When climbing on scaffolds there should be no need to struggle with a tangled cable as well. We have developed our wireless remote controller with ASMPocket software for this purpose.

BACKGROUND: Up to now there were only cabled remote controllers for Adixen leak detectors. Although lengths up to 100 metres are available, in practical use this always required dragging a long cable around – which could get tangled or a fork-lift truck drives over it etc.

The novel aspect is the operation of the leak detector from standard computer technology via wireless solutions. For this you need a PDA with the Windows Mobile operating system and an interface converter that can transmit the serial signals of the RS232 interface to your leak detector wirelessly. This is possible either via Bluetooth or WLAN. The interface converter needs no external voltage supply because the converter is supplied through the leak detector. Adixen gives you the required software free of charge!

So it is now possible to operate the leak detector wirelessly and to save the measured values with a device the size of a smartphone. In addition most PDAs have a voice recorder. The operator can use this to conveniently document comments, such as leaks that are found or other observations about the test piece, and can do so for less than half the price of a cabled remote controller.

Of course the software is not limited to a PDA – you can “quickly” check up on a long-term measurement in the production hall from your office by using any PC or Notebook with a Bluetooth interface or even with smartphones with the Windows Mobile operating system.

Another point – dragging helium cylinders around is also unnecessary. Simply connect your spraygun directly to a gas supply, e.g. in a football bladder. The bagpipe players among you will then have a clear advantage when operating in the field.
